Singer - Sharon Jaan [Bombay - India] BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Sharon Jaan's entry into pashto artist community was accidental. A native of India and currently living in Sweden, one day she was performing in an Indian gathering when Homayun [an Afgan national who also lives in Sweden] invited her to record a duet with him. Sharon Jaan was initially hesitant as she could not speak pashto but somehow agreed. The rest is history as they say, and now Sharon Jaan has 3 pashto music CDs to her credit. In the past many non-pashto speaking artists [e.g., Runa Laila, Ahmad Rushdie, Noor Jehan, Rehana Yasmin, Naseema Shaheen] have recorded in pashto, leaving a lasting impact. I am confident, Sharon Jaan is poised for success in Pashto music - it is just a matter of time. She has passion for what is best in Pashto music; as they say, passion and concentration could take you a long way towards success in any sphere of life. When I listened Sharon Jaan for the first time, I was delighted and requested her to send me a few of her songs and a brief bio so that I could include in my collection on the You Tube. She graciously responded, sending a bunch of her nice Urdu and Pashto songs and the following note about herself and her interest in music: I am originally from Bombay, India. My mother-tongue is Marathi, which originates from Sanskrit, as do most of Indian languages. I was always interested in singing and music and used to listen to all the latest movie songs and try to sing them in the same sur. Later on I started singing in music orchestras and stage performances. I sang with the music group of comedian Johnny Lever and accompanied Falguni Pathak, the "Churi jo Chamke" fame, for many shows in India and abroad. This way, I got to see many countries and cultures. After moving to Sweden, the performances slowed down as there are not many Indians or Indian musicians here. But my interest in music is undying and I keep doing riyaz. One day Homayun Sahebzai, requested me to sing a couple of Hindi songs for his first CD, and we started rehearsing. During which he proposed if I could sing a line or two in Pashto. That's how I started singing in Pashto. Our CD Kreshma is on the market in Europe and I am happy to know that my Pashto singing is being appreciated by the Afghan community. I have recorded a second album in Pashto, this time solo called "Sta Da Mehfil" which is on the way. This album has some classic Pashto songs which I have sung to a fresh new style of music. "Hase Pukhla" is 3rd in the top 20s at ranafm.org . I have started learning about the origins of Pashto music and the various legendary artists from the net and I am very grateful for your contributions and informative articles on You Tube. I love Gulnar Begum's voice and Zar Sangha folk songs. Ustad Nashenas, Ahmad Zahir, Ustad Awalmir, Ustad Sardar Ali Takkar, Qamar Gula, Naveeta Khan, Hedaytullah, Huma, Ahmad Wali and many more music artists have enriched the Pashto music. I still have a lot to learn and have just started listening to the different dialects in Pashto. Inshallah one day I will learn to speak Pashto.
