Electric Johnny (Jan Schouten) & Cor Schouten with the East And West Rockers - The Carioca (instrumental) Spontaneous jamsession from the East And West Rockers (best known for backing up Andy Tielman live) together with 2 of the original bandmembers from Johnny And his Skyrockets. Electric Johnny And The Skyrockets was formed in 1959 by the brothers Jan a.k.a. Electric Johnny (got his nickname for having a daytime job as an electrician), Cor, Daan and Henk Schouten in a Dutch city called Rotterdam. This city is probably best known for it's harbour, but also had a lively Indorock scene in the fifties and sixties with such bands as Oety And His Real Rockers, the Cherokees and of course Electric Johnny And The Skyrockets. In 1960 this band recorded their instrumental first single, Johnny On His Strings/Black Eyes Rock (CNR), which was also released in other countries such as Danmark (Sonet records), England (London records) and the U.S. (Felsted records). It became an unexpected success and was followed by a string of other instrumental singles and e.p.'s. The band also accompanied other artists such as Wieneke den Hartog (Wendy and the Gardenias), Roy Michael a.k.a. Shorty Miller a.k.a. Rolf Pichel (Black Dynamites/Los Indonesios), Siw Malmkwist and recorded a vocal single with the Hovinga Brothers. Soon the band became pretty well known and got invitations from all over the country to play at the many Indo parties and music festivals. Electric Johnny And The Skyrockets developped a truly unique sound blending their Indorock with smooth South American rhythms. A sound that would eventually become their trademark, but their sophisticated guitar parts on tracks like Begin The Beguine and Barcarolle also standout above the rest. After years of success and performing all over the country the band finally called it quits in 1968. Some bandmembers would still occasionally perform for family and friends, but it would take some 30 more years for them to reunite and play their old hits live on stage again.
