Connee, Martha and Helvetia began their careers in New Orleans. The sisters worked at a local radio station where they were given a daily singing program. In addition to their singing talents, Martha played piano; Vet played the violin, banjo, and guitar; and Connee - the cello, sax, and guitar. Connee always had to perform seated as she had a childhood accident that paralyzed her legs. in 1930, they recorded 4 sides for Okeh and in that same year saw their careers soar as they became nationally known from their coast to coast radio broadcasts. In '31 they signed with Brunswick and were one of America's hottest groups from then until 1936 when they broke up. The sisters appeared in movies, made records with the Dorsey Brothers and were national radio show regulars. When Martha and Vet left the group in '36, Connee continued a successful career as a soloist. The Andrews sisters began as Boswell imitators. Bunny Berrigan can be heard on trumpet on this 1932 movie clip of Crazy People.
