A commercial fishing vessel reported that it struck something hard and immoveable in the Saquatucket Harbor (Andrews River) mid channel about two weeks ago. The Harbormasters Office reported to the CG and was able to find a clue, a short 2' length of heavy chain, above the sand on bottom using a video camera. In this video taken later, a Coast Guard ghost mooring from a former channel marker is found and located by the Harbormasters Team. These large 3000 lbs cement blocks are often left behind after the marker is torn away by winter ice or a parting of an aging chain. Mariners in the northeast are cautioned never to cut corners near any of these government marks in shoal waters as you could easily be straying over one of these dangerous blocks.
